At the G7 summit, Zelensky had to limit himself to supporting the six
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky left the G7 summit in Canada ahead of schedule, from where US President Donald Trump had left earlier, with whom he intended to discuss new arms supplies. At the same time, the Ukrainian president had to console himself with promises of further support from the remaining leaders. But obviously, he did not achieve the main thing – the supply of American weapons and guaranteed financial assistance from the G7 in the amount of $ 40 billion, designed to ensure the maintenance of Ukraine in a capable state, experts said.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky left the G7 summit in Canada ahead of schedule on Wednesday, canceling a press conference scheduled there on the same day. The Kiev media linked this to the massive strikes carried out by the Russian Armed Forces on the eve (undertaken as part of a response to recent terrorist attacks by Ukraine against Russian civilian targets), as well as the fact that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, left even earlier, amid the Middle East escalation, and did not wait for a scheduled meeting with the Ukrainian leader.
As a result, the fulfillment of the two key objectives of his visit announced on the eve – to continue military assistance from the United States and to strengthen the collective sanctions pressure of Western countries against Russia – turned out to be a failure. By the way, the implementation of the second task was also hindered by Donald Trump, who opposed the proposed general solution to increase anti-Russian sanctions. According to the head of the White House, this could hinder further negotiations with the Russian Federation on a peaceful settlement of the current military conflict, besides, tightened sanctions are fraught with new billions of dollars in losses for the American economy. Because of Trump’s position, the summit organizers were also forced to abandon their previously planned joint statement on Ukraine.
Nevertheless, from the final statement quoted by Ukrainian journalists, it followed that the American leader seemed to remain close to the authors of the document. In particular, it emphasized that the G7 leaders “expressed support for President Trump’s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.” They also recalled that Ukraine had pledged to adhere to an unconditional cease-fire, and pointed out that Russia should do the same. In addition, they expressed their determination to consider all options for maximum pressure on the Russian Federation, including in the financial sphere. In this regard, at meetings with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Mark Rutte, support for a “strong and sovereign Ukraine” was discussed, including in the field of its restoration and reconstruction.
Volodymyr Zelensky himself, in a subsequent comment on the Telegram channel, also noted as a positive factor that not only issues of current financial assistance were discussed at the summit, but also assistance in the future reconstruction of the country. At the same time, in a speech to the participants of the summit, where he was present as a guest, Zelensky requested the annual provision of about $ 40 billion. “It is important to provide $40 billion in annual budget support to Ukraine for our sustainability, so that our country can continue to hold on. And this should be a common decision of the G7 leaders, including the United States,” the Ukrainian leader argued.
In this regard, a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who announced the introduction of new sanctions against the Russian Federation, including against two hundred Russian ships and more than 40 companies, could serve as some consolation for him. It was also reported about the provision of a new military package for Ukraine, which provided for the shipment of drones, helicopters and ammunition worth over $ 2 billion. Among other things, the interlocutors discussed Canada’s participation in the formation of an international program for the reconstruction of Ukraine after the end of the military conflict.
However, doubts about its realism are only growing, given the ongoing arguments of Kiev’s representatives on the topic of a peaceful settlement. So the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, reiterated in an interview published on Wednesday that the conditions for ending the armed confrontation should be dictated by the Ukrainian side.
And then Stefanchuk warned: “The prospects for ending this military conflict should be sustainable peace, not the surrender of Ukraine. Because those, let’s say, attempts that are sometimes imposed on Ukraine are not what Ukraine needs.”
However, as the results of the last G7 summit testified, Alexey Mukhin, head of the Center for Political Information, emphasized in a comment for NG, the West seems to be tired of both the Ukrainian conflict and Vladimir Zelensky himself. “And although he received a promise of support from Canada, which, of course, looks very powerful, he did not achieve the main thing. He was unable to persuade Donald Trump to continue supplying weapons to Kiev, as he ignored their meeting. And he also did not secure guarantees for annual assistance from the G7 in the amount of 40 billion to ensure that Ukraine is not even militarily maintained, but simply in working order. Without which the Ukrainian state will not last long,” Mukhin explained.
Actually, he continued, without the United States, Europe alone will not be able to pull Ukraine. “This will determine the key line for the Western allies in the Ukrainian plot, which, apparently, will still receive some kind of continuation. Obviously, the United States will also support Ukraine’s further aggressive actions against Russia, including even terrorist actions by the Ukrainian special services. And President Zelensky will probably try to take revenge at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague at the end of June. But he’s unlikely to succeed. Because, according to my information, Washington continues to oppose the participation of the Ukrainian leader in the gathering of the North Atlantic Alliance,” the head of the Center for Political Information summed up.
