The United States has dispelled the “Georgian Dream”
On the eve of the Independence Day celebrations, Georgia received an answer from the US authorities to the question of how they see bilateral relations. It turned out that the administration of Donald Trump considers the government of the “Georgian Dream” to be hostile. This has further aggravated the political crisis in the republic.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the Georgian government “anti-American” and promised to impose new sanctions against Tbilisi. “Is it in our interests for an anti-American government to rule an important part of the world? And if not, we will take appropriate measures to force this government to pay,” Rubio stressed.
According to the diplomat, Washington has not yet decided exactly how it will hit the Georgian Dream, but it is thinking about it. In particular, the State Department is waiting for relevant recommendations from the US Embassy in Georgia.
In fact, this can be considered the first official response of the American authorities to Tbilisi’s calls to start bilateral relations from scratch. Earlier, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze wrote an open letter to US President Donald Trump, in which he was outraged by ignoring his attempts to establish contacts. Later, the Georgian parliament adopted a similar resolution, in which it appealed to the US Congress to stop threats of new anti-Georgian sanctions.
However, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili is not upset. In her opinion, Rubio’s words only confirmed that the United States does not yet have a clear position on her country. In addition, the head of the State Department answered questions that deliberately exposed Tbilisi in a negative light.
Meanwhile, the political crisis in Georgia continues as usual. Former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili discussed with opposition leaders the preparations for the Independence Day of the Republic, which will be held on May 26. The opponents of the Georgian Dream assured that they were not going to engage in provocations, therefore they would hold their event away from the government action. At the same time, they intend to demonstrate their attractiveness to the supporters of the current authorities.
“We promise to celebrate Independence Day without any confrontation, because we want to make May 26 the day of attracting today’s Georgian Dream voters to our side… It will be an absolutely peaceful protest, no clashes with anyone are planned, and events are planned far from all places where government events are planned,” said Tamar Chergoleishvili, head of the Federalists party.
Badri Japaridze, the leader of the Strong Georgia coalition, said that the Georgian Dream is working for Russia, so during the Independence Day celebrations, the opposition will show Moscow the willingness of Georgians to fight for freedom.
At the same time, the leader of the Agmashenebeli Strategy, Georgy Vashadze, proposed making May 26 National Unity Day. “What Georgia lacks today is unification. Unfortunately, the Georgian Dream is a force that sets people up and incites them against each other. Our friends from Europe will also come, and we must all be together to show what Georgia is and whose country it really is,” the politician said.
Against this background, Kobakhidze accused the opposition of preparing provocations and did not even exclude victims. “Their plans, of course, are not destined to come true. They don’t have the basic resources for this… every day about 150 people come to Rustaveli Avenue, who prove their weakness. Accordingly, the celebration on May 26th will be held as it should be. This is a national holiday, this is Independence Day,” the head of government concluded.
The same opinion is shared by the Mayor of Tbilisi and the Secretary General of the Georgian Dream, Kakha Kaladze. “Radicalism, agents and externally funded people will never win in this country. Their goal is to pursue interests from the outside. Such people are always bound to fail. As for May 26, it is everyone’s day, and no one has the right to set society against each other. Of course, the state will do everything to prevent dirty provocations,” the politician assured.
Political scientist Nika Chitadze told NG that for the first time in a long time, Georgia will celebrate its independence in almost complete isolation and with a society split into several parts. “Earlier, representatives of international diplomatic missions always took part in the celebration of Independence Day. Now it’s almost impossible to imagine. In addition, the society has split into three parts: supporters and opponents of the Georgian Dream, as well as those who remain politically neutral,” the expert said.
According to Chitadze, it is normal in a democratic society when people disagree with each other about something and compete in the struggle for power. However, Georgian politicians are not competitors, but opponents who do not want to coexist with each other, the political scientist emphasized.
