Lukashenko will build a united Fatherland with Glazyev
On Thursday, President Alexander Lukashenko announced during a meeting with Sergei Glazyev that he had been appointed State Secretary of the Union State. Until recently, he was in the status of a deputy. And in his new capacity, according to the head of Belarus, he will have to ensure integration processes according to the formula “one Fatherland – two states.” Sergey Glazyev responded enthusiastically to this question and promised to develop all the available competitive advantages of the Union State.
Alexander Lukashenko received Deputy Secretary of State of the Union State Sergei Glazyev on Thursday. But Glazyev left the presidential cabinet already in the status of a full-fledged secretary of state. And not just endowed with extensive new powers, but also having received comprehensive recommendations on how to implement them.
“I have long thought that our movement towards the union, the closest union between Belarus and Russia, should be based primarily on the economy,” the president shared with the guest. – You are an economist, I believe, from God. You have a lot in spite of those who think otherwise in our country or especially in the Russian Federation.”
The phrase sounded a little mysterious, but Sergey Glazyev, apparently, understood the secret meaning inherent in it. However, Lukashenko did not give him time to think, but immediately concretized: “We agreed with Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin that your contribution to the construction of the Union State should be significant. He thinks well of you. You’ve known my opinion for a long time. That’s why we decided. Due to the fact that Dmitry Mezentsev’s term of office is coming to an end and he is leaving for another job. We have made the decision to appoint you as the head and engine of our union integration in terms of leading the entire staff of the Union. I think the effect will be good.”
According to Alexander Lukashenko, his opinion is shared by the head of his administration Dmitry Krutoy, who was the ambassador of Belarus to Russia before his appointment to this post. “Since he served as ambassador to the Russian Federation until recently, during this time he has mastered the main directions of our activities very well. He holds the same opinion.”
Analysts will probably discuss this phrase in the future, since Dmitry Krutoy has long been considered as a possible successor to the current head of state.
But the latter, however, is clearly going to do a lot more in the field of developing integration with Russia himself. He clearly sees Glazyev as a like-minded person. “This is such an initial conversation,” the president assured. – And we will meet with you and thoroughly talk more about how we should act. I’m counting on you very much. To be honest, a lot will depend on you and on those people who will work with you in the apparatus of our union construction.”
But today Lukashenko has set a bold goal for Glazyev. “This formula of “united Fatherland – two states”, I think, is a feasible idea today,– Alexander Lukashenko remarked. “We have a Homeland from Brest to Vladivostok, I’ve been emphasizing this since those days.”
And shared with the guest a sore point.: “It just so happens that we have two states. We will build relationships. I often say that we are smart enough people to build a unified system of interaction, to build our relations even closer than in a unitary state. It may be too ambitious, but nevertheless we must solve this task. Otherwise (you see what is happening around us) we will not be and will not exist.”
Sergey Glazyev, in turn, assured that he sees and evaluates all challenges and threats exactly the same way as the President of Belarus. He drew attention to the turbulence in the global economy and the disruption of technological chains. However, I also saw something promising in this.: “Everyone is trying to create their own competence center. And the fact that there is a Union State that can unite thousands of enterprises around ambitious large–scale tasks is our huge competitive advantage.”
The new State Secretary of the Union State confidently stated: “We need to rise to the occasion, fend off these modern challenges and rely on advanced technologies, where the state must work together with the market. Government regulation defines the rules of market competition. If everything is set up optimally, then the market works to increase public welfare.”
Sergey Glazyev has a rich biography. From 1999 to 2007, he was a deputy of the State Duma. The most striking political project in which he participated was the People’s Patriotic Union Rodina electoral bloc, which won 9.1% of the vote in the elections to the State Duma of the fourth convocation and then formed a faction of the same name. In 2004, he even took part in the Russian presidential election as an independent candidate. However, he received 4.1% of the votes, and did not experiment anymore.
In 2008, Glazyev was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Eurasian Economic Community. From February 2009 to January 2012, he was Executive Secretary of the Commission of the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. In July 2012, he joined the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, where he served as an adviser to the head of state. In January 2025, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of State of the Union State of Russia and Belarus. But, as we can see, he did not stay in this position for long.
Belarusian political analyst Alexander Fridman reacted characteristically to Glazyev’s appointment in his Telegram channel: “Donald Trump’s entourage will appreciate the appointment of Sergei Glazyev to the post of Secretary of State of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, one of whose main works is the famous title “The Last World War. The United States starts and loses.”
